Fatal crashes involving large trucks have been on the rise over the past decade, according to a recent report in the Denver Post citing federal statistics.
Fatal crashes involving large trucks in the United States jumped an alarming 42 percent from 2009-2017, according to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data. In Alabama, deaths ranged from a low of 80 in 2009 to a high of 144 in 2016. Underscoring the danger to other motorists, 82 percent of the fatalities recorded in 2017 nationwide were not occupants of the large trucks.
The appalling numbers came during the same period that federal and state agencies have been employing sophisticated technology to track mechanical and safety violations nationwide – a system designed to improve the well-being of motorists.
“We hold this industry to a higher standard for safety, and we agree with that we should, because we recognize there’s a higher consequence for accidents,” said Greg Fulton, president of the Colorado Motor Carriers Association.
What Causes Truck Accidents in Alabama?
Truck accidents happen for many reasons, many of them due to drivers who are:
- Distracted
- Texting
- Speeding
- Drunk
- Tired
- Impaired
- Inexperienced
In some cases, the fault can be traced to poorly maintained trucks, including inadequate tires and faulty braking systems.
Chris Turner, director of crash and data programs for the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance, defends truckers while at the same time noting not every driver is as careful or skilled as necessary.
“This is their livelihoods and they take it seriously,” he said of drivers. “But like any situation or profession, there are those who aren’t as professional, and they are the ones who are typically involved in those type of collisions.”
